We took Jack in to see Dr. Treybig again today, as he’s now officially two weeks old.

Jack survived his two-week check up, just fine. Dr. Treybig says he’s growing just fine, and that everything seems to be in order (she actually said “he’s perfect” and we agree). Dad didn’t survive the trip unharmed: The little guy pee’d on me right before the nurse stuck his heel with a little needle… which didn’t make him happy, by the way.

He weighs 8 lbs. 2 oz. and is 21 inches long. He’s grown a full pound since he was born and is an inch taller than he was last week. Dr. Treybig says he has a birthmark on the back of his head and maybe on his back.

Also, last night, Michelle visited after work. Josh also came over after work, as Elise is out of town at a funeral in Iowa (our sympathies Elise).

I took some photos last night of Jack with Josh and Michelle with the new camera, as I’m trying to learn how to use it better. I think they turned out pretty good. They’re a little dark on my Windows laptop screen, but look great on the Macintosh screen, so I apologize if they’re a little dark for you.

Last weekend, Michelle Evans and Patsy Meriwether, two of our dearest friends here in Austin, threw Christine a baby shower.

Lots of our old friends and new friends, as well as some family, attended. Christine brought home lots of gifts, but she really said she enjoyed spending time with her friends and family in such a fun way more than anything. Patsy and Michelle really put together a fun shower, and had all of the girls that attended create a special keepsake gift that each one of them contributed to.

Thanks to everyone for the gifts, and for making Christine feel so loved.

Photos from the shower are here.

(Oh, and David and Evan and I had a good time on the golf course while the girls were all at the shower!)

Forgot to write about this, but I was going through our photos earlier today, and I realized that I forgot to post the ones I have from Labor Day weekend.

This past Labor Day, Evan, Shadel, Ella, Christine and I, met Debbie and Raymond out at the lake house in Lakeway on Friday night. Raymond cooked out, and we enjoyed chatting outside on the patio.

On Saturday, The boys went out in the backyard and tore up the weeds and ivy that were infesting the flower beds, while the girls shopped, and then we all took a break in the pool. We took a nap or two sometime during the day.

We played poker that evening, before retiring to bed.

Then on Sunday, Ella took a bath, and Greg, Cheri, Paige, Patrick and Matthew came up for the day. We took another nap or two sometime during the day.

We all played and had a good time before cooking out again. On Monday we got up and all headed back to our respective homes.

The photos are online here, and there are some great shots of the kids mixed in. Click the big photo to advance.

Saturday night, Christine and I went over to Stafford’s new house. Christine works with Stafford, and his older sister is one of her best friends from a past life. Stafford just bought his first home, and threw a little party to celebrate becoming a home owner.

We got there around 5 (after priming a room that we’re painting in our house) and immediately joined the group in teh backyard. We played dominos, ate some bar-b-que, and enjoyed the conversation long into the night. I took a few pitcures throughout the night.

Towards the end of the night, Stafford showed some real class, and offered to let me borrow a few golf clubs, since I’m just taking up the game. He said there’s no reason to buy any clubs yet, if I can borrow enough to start off. So, I’m now the proud care-taker of a 5 iron, 3 iron, a wood and a putter. Good clubs too. Now I just need a bag and a glove, and I’ll be set for a while.

On Sunday, I painted. I primed the ceilings of three rooms, the dining room, and the kitchen. I then proceeded to paint the dining room (two coats) and all three ceilings. I was done, and tired. I’d been painting for 5 hours or so.

Christine came home after spending the day shopping to decide that she didn’t like the color in the dining room, so she went out to Home Depot, bought a gallon of paint, and we painted the dining room again. Sound familiar? It should, we did the same thing a few years back in Fort Worth.

Next weekend? More painting, but that should be it. Should be done after that… unless ‘we’ decide on a different color.

Today, I swung a golf club for the first time in my life.

A buddy of mine, Kevin, and I met at the Hank Hankey Golf Ranch of Austin tonight. Kevin asked me earlier in the day if I golfed, to which I replied “no” and he asked me to hit the driving range with him tonight. I figured “why the heck not?”

So, we met around 7:45, and rented a large bucket of little white golf balls for $13.00. There were about 100, maybe 150 balls in the bucket.

golf ball

The section of the driving range set aside for drivers was pretty full, so we headed over to the side that’s set aside for irons, and I got my first lessons from a buddy.

The first advice Kevin gave me was typical Kevin: “You wanna know what the first thing you need to know about your golf swing is? Just try to look cool!”

I laughed.

Kevin said “No, I’m serious. It sounds stupid, but try to look cool, and relaxed. Don’t get too tight, be conscious of the fact that you look cool doing this, and you won’t feel so silly making the small adjustments I’ll tell you to make throughout tonight.”

So, I took his advice. And I hit my first ball with a 3 iron.

It went pretty far (I think) but sliced way to the right … waaaaay to the right.

Kevin was just impressed I hit the ball.

We both nailed about 100 little white balls down the driving range with irons before heading over to the side for the drivers. Then we polished off the rest of the balls before retiring to our vehicles to polish off a beer.

It was a lot of fun and I’m really looking forward to my future golf game. It can only get better from here.

This past weekend we hit the Guadalupe. Loads of fun, but exhausting… I think I’m getting old.

Evan and Shadel came up on Friday night (with Ella!), and we had a few old friends over for dinner. There were 12 people at the house: Allan, Brandi, Janeen & Alfonso, Josh & Elise, Evan & Shadel, Marc & Cyndi (and Rowan), Christine and myself. It’s the first real gathering of friends we’ve had in the new house, mainly because the house wasn’t ready (and still isn’t) to have people over. We still haven’t painted most of the rooms or gotten things where we want them to be decorating-wise.

I grilled corn-on-the-cob and steaks. Josh made his famous sweet+russet mashed potatoes. They all turned out pretty well. The conversations centered around high-school and what we’ve all done since high-school.

The next day, we got up and headed to the Guadalupe River. It was a gorgeous Saturday, and I personally haven’t floated the river since last summer, so I was looking forward to it. Christine and Shadel stayed home to take care of Ella while Evan and I headed over to Allan’s to collect him, then to Josh and Elise’s to collect them, before making the 45 minute drive to New Braunfels with 5 adults in my Jetta. We stopped long enough to pick up Brad, Carlo, Erin and her friend Phil and Toni.

We met Janeen, Alfonso, Brandi, Adrian and Alex (Alfonso’s cousin) at The Shanty (in Canyon Lake, TC), got our tubes, and walked to the river (Next time we’re going to Rockin’ R again). Adrian hooked us up with cheaper tube prices so the walk was worth it, but the walk from The Shanty to the river wouldn’t normally… Where we usually put in, you don’t have to pay for the extra tubes for your coolers, and there are more people there.

So, on the river, much beer was consumed, much conversation was had, and we ran into a bunch of people. I managed to get caught up in a tree root system once and had to work my way out of it. I came out relatively unscathed.

We had two water-proof disposable cameras, and took a few pictures of the events of the day.

When it was time to get out of the river, we all stopped, except for Josh, Alfonso, Janeen and Evan… they floated about 30 minutes further down-river and had to trek their way back up to where we were.

After loading up the tubes on the bus, and turning them in, we headed over to the Clear Springs Cafe in Leon Valley (might as well have been New Braunfels to me). Good catfish. Really good catfish (then I wonder if being super dehydrated and hungry as hell didn’t have something to do with my opinion.

After dinner we said our good-byes and drove back to Austin.

On Sunday, I awoke to discover I had a helluva sunburn on my tummy and upper thighs. Gotta love the river!

note: Josh posted his version of the events, and a few pictures from Friday night on his website.

One of my best buddies from the Army visited us in early May.

Bob and Jen were our best friends in the Army.

You might remember some pictures we posted of Bob’s beautiful daughter Sophie Kate from back in 2001 (gosh that seems like so long ago).

We missed Bob for the last year while he was in Korea, so when we heard that he was coming to visit we were super excited, and then we found out that he was leaving for Iraq in less than a week. Man, that sucks… Bob was home for 3 weeks or so before he shipped off to Iraq.

While it sucks that Bob’s in Iraq right now, I’m also very proud to call him my friend, and one of my dearest friends at that. We had a good time visiting a few hot spots in Austin, and seeing the sights with him.

We want Bob to come home soon, and thank him for his service to his country.

Christine and I went to Fayetteville the weekend of May 21st, to attend the Fayetteville Crawfish Boil with Evan and Shadel, and a few friends.

Boy did we have a wild time! There must have been 800 people there, and 4, 000 pounds of crawfish at least.

Amber, one of Shadel’s closest friends from high-school, brought her fiancee, Jason, from Phoenix in for the weekend and we all introduced him to crawfish with big warm Texas-sized crawfish boil. Jason didn’t have a single problem slopping down the mudbugs with the rest of us, and even learned how to suck the heads.

suck the head

Ryan was there with his friend Jack.

Ella was just a tad fussy once, but was a model child most of the night, especially when Kelly held her.

All in all, I think the girls had a good time, but didn’t eat as many crawdads as the big boys, or drink as much beer (evidenced by the fact that Jason was caught relieving himself in the parking lot before the ride home)

We retired to Evan and Shadel’s house in Sealy and kept the party going into the wee hours of the morning, out on the front porch.

We had a great time and hope to do it again sometime soon.

We went to the State UIL Track meet this year to watch Kari “K.K” Burt run the 300 meter low hurdles. Kari ran a fantastic race against some fantastic hurdlers and came in 5th place overall in the state.

That’s quite an accomplishment and we were glad to get to go watch her run and visit with her, her mom, her sister, and Nanny and Bussy. Seeing Coach Seals and Mrs. Seals again were a delight.

Bussy and I remarked on how much of an accomplishment just making it to the State level was, before the race. All of us are very pround of Kari’s performance. 5th place in the whole state sure isn’t a bad place to be in, when you consider just how many athletes that means Kari beat to get to where she is in her game.

Kari’s going to start attending Texas A&M later this year, and we wish her the best of luck there. If she shows half the competitive spirit there that she did running track in high-school, we know we can expect great things from her.

This weekend Evan and Shadel brought Ella to Austin. It was their first trip to Austin since we moved into the new house, and Ella’s first trip ever (there are going to be a lot of those ‘firsts’ aren’t there?)

We had a great, relaxing and fun weekend.

On Friday night, we stayed home and watched a movie, then Christine and I took turns watching the baby during the night.

On Saturday, Christine and Shadel treated themselves to a visit to the salon. Evan and I spent the day visiting Home Depot, killing wasps nests, mowing the yard, replacing a few sprinkler heads, playing PS2 and Nintendo, and watching the baby. We all then went to Hula Hut for dinner before calling it a night at 8:30 or 9:00.

Sunday brought french toast and Lil’ Smokies for breakfast courtesy of Christine, and then Evan and I took a trip to Home Depot again before getting the garage somwhat into shape with the addition of 3 nice shelves and a little organization.

Then we had a late lunch at Freebirds World Burrito before the three of them headed back to Bellville.

Ella’s all of three weeks old now, and is a wonderful baby.

Josh and Elise came over for Sunday night dinner and Suprano’s. Josh made a mean queso for all of us, and we enjoyed the show while catching up on each other’s varied happenings.

Chip and Christi had their baby last Friday (February 20, 2004) at 6 p.m at 6 lbs. 10oz and 19.5″long. I talked to Chip today, and he sounds like ‘the proud papa’ that I know he is. Mom is doing well, and Grandma and Grandpa were in town for the festivities.

Chip sent two pictures and a movie for all to enjoy…. update Chip sent along a second movie, this one taken 5 minutes after the first.

Christine and I left Fort Worth yesterday at around 5:30 pm, headed west-bound on I-20 for Abilene. It was a 2 hour 57 minute trip according to MapQuest. We made it in 2 hours.

It took us a couple of drives up and down the main drag in Abilene to find the hospital, but once we were parked it only took a few minutes to find Nanny and Bussy and Sarah (Amy’s oldest daughter at 17 years old). It was ‘eating time’ for the patients, so we couldn’t walk in to say hi to her just yet, so we sat out in the Critical Care waiting room with Nanny and Bussy.

The good news is that Amy is now in "Stable" condition and has been moved from the Critical Care unit to a private room.

Bussy gave us the run down on Amy, and Nanny gave the details (or maybe it was the other way around) but both seemed quite encouraged by her progress since last Thursday. We relayed messages from people in Bellvile that have offered to help in some way, and they were quite moved and thankful, but they think they have everything covered for now. They’ll let us know if anyone needs to pitch in.

The story is that Amy was driving outside of Abilene in her SUV, probably going the speed limit, or close to it. She doesn’t remember what really happened, but she lost control of the vehicle and it started rolling. Amy had been wearing her seat-belt, but only the lap part. She’d put the shoulder harness behind her for comfort. The SUV rolled 6 times, and each time it did she was thrown a little farther out the window, but not totally out, until the vehicle came to a stop. Think about that: it rolled SIX times and she was hanging partly out of the driver’s side window.

Two 18-wheeler drivers saw the wreck, and immediately called 911, while an off-duty ER nurse who just happened to be passing by, stopped to render aid (this is probably what saved Amy’s life).

During the rolling, the pressure on Amy’s torso by the lap-belt managed to completely rupture her bladder, but didn’t harm any other major internal organs, though she was bleeding badly internally. Her left leg was compound-broken three times above the knee, and once or twice below the knee. Her left shoulder was beat up pretty badly – there is bone damage and most of the skin from the bottom of the shoulder blade to the shoulder and in to the neck is just gone.

Amy’s right elbow is shattered, and her right heel is pretty bunged up, and I think the achille’s tendon has been snapped. Amy’s back right-side from the bottom of her buttocks up to her shoulder is ‘hamburger’ according to Bussy, and they don’t know if it got that way from skidding on the ground, or from the violence of the roll, and the action of her body on the seats of the vehicle.

When Amy was delivered to the hospital ER by the ambulance, the doctors didn’t know what might be wrong with her internally, so they performed two cat scans prior to slicing from the bottom of her sternum, around her belly button, down to her belly. They said that she had lost about 12 units of blood by the time she’d gotten to the hospital, and most of it was still in her belly. The inspected all of the organs and repaired the bladder, which had ‘just exploded’.

After the internal organs were ‘fixed’ they turned their attention to the left leg, which was the worst extremity.

The doctor told Bussy that he pulled all kinds of dirt, grass, wheat, and other stuff out of the wound (like way up under the skin) of her broken leg, on three different occasions. To me, it sounded kind of like cleaning a bird after you’ve killed it: open hole, insert hand, dig around, remove stuff… quite gruesome to be sure, but the doctors are the ones telling the stories… The doctor said he could have grown a farm out of all the stuff he pulled out of the wound.

That’s their biggest fear right now, infection in that leg, and they’re letting that wound drain as they continue to watch her progress and work on the other injuries.

They’ve talked about how long it’s going to take for Amy to fully recover, and they’ve said anything from 6 months to a year at least, and they aren’t really even sure of that. They don’t know if she’ll be able to walk again normally, or even walk for that matter.

Amy’s a tough cookie, though. She’s gonna make it out of this just fine. I just pray that Sarah and Kari make it through this okay.

We left Amy a "cookie-bouquet" so hopefully she’ll get some enjoyment out of eating some sweets (if they let her).

The weather wasn’t so hot as we were leaving Abilene, so we stopped at a Super 8 motel for the night ($35 for the night) and drove to Fort Worth early this morning…

If you’re a friend of mine, you’ve probably heard me speak of the Lockett family, or at least Nanny and Bussy Fox.

Background: When we moved to Bellville, my mom was befriended by many people in the local Methodist church, and one of those families was the Fox family (Nanny and Bussy). Another was the Lockett family (Wayne, Vicki, Rob, Lori, Reese, and Haley). Rob and I were best of friends before we hit the double digits in age, and Vicki is Nanny and Bussy’s daughter, so Rob is their grandson. Vicki’s sister’s name is Amy Burt and she has two daughters: Sarah and Kari.

Last night my mom called me with news that Amy had been in a pretty serious car wreck in Abilene (about 2 hours west of Fort Worth) and that it was pretty bad. I still don’t have the exact details, but I just got off the phone with Bussy, and it’s pretty bad. I know that she took on a lot of blood, and some of her internal organs were damaged. She also has some majorly broken bones.

Bussy just told me that she’s been upgraded from ‘critical’ to ‘stable’ so she’s come a long way. He also said that the doctors really didn’t expect her to make it through the first night, so to me its a blessing that she’s come this far (she’s been in the hospital since Thursday of last week). I’m sitting here, having a hard time working, mainly because my thoughts keep drifting towards Vicki, Nanny, and Sarah and Kari… I know that Amy means a lot to them, and I keep praying that she recovers quickly, though from the sound of it, it’s going to take a while.

They still haven’t done much reconstructive surgery, just the life-saving stuff at this point, but they’re working on all of the procedures that will have to be done.

Christine and I are driving out to Abilene tonight to tell them all that we love them, and to show Amy that she means a lot to us. I’ll try to write an update after we see them all, and get some more information.

Yesterday, Christine and I flew into Houston around 3:30, though our flight should have landed about 30 minutes earlier. The weather in Houston was pretty bad, so we just flew in circles for a while. The flight was great though, and the plane was only about half full. I finally got the chance to read my first Fast Company issue cover to cover. There were some great articles in that one.

Anyways, after we got our bags, we headed to the Avis bus. The driver dropped us off at the Avis Preferred counter, and we were given a free upgrage, so we chose to rent a Mitsubishi Diamante – fully loaded. Great car, and great service. Need some Avis coupons? Here are some that I use a lot.

We called Debbie on our way to her house, and she said that she and Sherrie didn’t need any help with the flowers, so we should just head on over to the hotel, so we did. Evan, Reese, and Jason ‘Zippy’ Zwahr were already there, so while Christine took a bath, I went up to the boy’s rooms to say hi. We went and bought a 12 pack of beer, and drank a little of it before heading to the rehersal.

The rehersal started at 7:00pm, and everyone was there on time, except for the maid of honor. She flew in from Atlanta, and couldn’t find the place, so we went a head without here. She eventually made it later, and we caught her up.

At 8:00, we all headed towards Katy to eat at the Cafe Red Onion. Mom and Debbie did a great job picking this place for the rehersal dinner. Talk about good food, and a great bar… wow! Michael (Christine’s older brother) was able to make it to the dinner, and it was great to see him.

We also got to see Bussy Fox and Kari, Reese’s little cousin. She’s now 16, and beautiful. I still remember her being 4 years old, and telling me that one day she’d marry me. Kari’s now running track in high-school and is looking forward to heading to college.

Mrs. Payton and Mi-ma Payton were there, and Maxine and ‘Cap’ Hillboldt were there. Great seeing them again too. We got to catch up on everyone and find out how things are going. It was really great to see them all.

The family was also there, and Shadel’s family was a lot of fun. The girls in the wedding all got a special desert, called a bride’s maid’s cake, that had little charms in it for them. Each charm meant something, and Christine pulled the one out that said your wishes will come true. (I hope she’s wishing for money).

Did I say how good the food was? If you get a chance to eat at a Red Onion in Houston sometime, do it. Order the Seafood Enchiladas, and you won’t be sorry.

Afterwards, the boys all headed out for a little ‘guy’ entertainment. I went to bed at 5am. It was a blast hanging out with Evan and his friends.

The wedding starts in a couple of hours, so I’m going to take a nap now.

From today’s Aggie Hotline:

Sitting Down on the Job Is Not Such a Bad Thing to Ergonomist Gordon VosGordon Vos, an assistant professor in the Ergonomics Center of the Texas Engineering Experiment Station (TEES), studied pressures on the posterior while people sit in chairs. Vos’ 2001 doctoral analysis of buttock/thigh pressure and a dozen top ergonomic chairs also looked at the importance of armrests and posture. “Chair construction was the most significant factor in lowering peak pressure. Armrests and posture didn’t make much difference when compared to the chair design, ” said Vos, who noted nearly 75 percent of all work in industrial countries is done while seated. Vos also found that men experience more pressure on their bottoms when sitting in chairs than females. He added that while more research was needed to determine why, he thought it was probably due to weight. An online version of this story — including photos — is available.

Think about that next time you look at buying an Aeron.
