Last night, I fed Jack his bottle at about 1:30 in the morning.
He was done eating all 5 ounces of the bottle by 1:45, and wasn’t really sleepy.
I held him in my arms and around 1:50 or so, he was smiling at me, and laughing at me. It was so adorable.
The thought that someday this experience will be over, and I won’t have a smiling, laughing son at 2:00 in the morning got to me.
I flew to Dallas this morning on an American Airlines MD-80. The flight was packed, but it wasn’t at all uncomfortable, thanks to American’s “More Room in Coach” mantra. I was able to lean my seat back and cross my legs (try that in a suit wearing a part of boots on Delta).
Thanks American.
Oh, and it was really tough to leave Jack and his mom this morning. right before I left Christine handed him to me, and when I held him he strrrrreeeched like he was saying “no wait… just a few more minutes” and then he stared at me for a few moments. I may be in Dallas but my heart is in Austin this morning.
Today, Jack and Christine and I headed to Dr. Treybig’s office for Jack’s two-month visit (and that most horrible of four-letter words for a two-month old baby: shots).
Yep, that’s right, Jack got his first shots today. Ouch!
But, he did really well folks. Really well. He took them like a man, and only got a little fussy towards the end of them. (Okay, he screamed pretty good, but the nurse that gave him the shots was awesome, and they went really quick, so he was back to normal pretty quick.)
We learned a lot at the doctor office today. Seems like we should start trying to put Jack on a schedule starting now… though she said he might not pick up on the sleeping schedule until he’s about 4 months old. She said that we might want to start feeding him one formula bottle right before bed now, and that usually helps them sleep a little longer at night (wouldn’t that be nice?).
Jack weighed 11 lbs. 12 oz. and is 22 1/2 inches long. He’s growing well and looks good. All of his joints work well, and he’s super strong. He showed of his strength for the doctor by standing with Daddy’s help, and by picking his head up and looking around when she put him on his tummy.
It was a good visit for all of us… especially now that Jack has his immunizations.

Big news folks! Bob is home! Bob is home in Texas!
Bob Beuerlein is home from Iraq. He’s been home for a few weeks, and now that he’s settled back at Fort Hood, he came to visit us in Austin. To celebrate we headed to Debbie and Raymond’s lakehouse (after a quick stop at Fry’s) on Saturday.
Bob brought a couple of his Army buddies, Jessie and Chip, down from Fort Hood. We invited Marc, Cyndi and Rowan out to the lake too. I cooked steaks, salads, and some fruit.
The boys played poker while the girls watched the kids. We played no-limit Texas Hold’em, and I won the game. (Sorry guys).

After everyone drove home on Saturday night, Christine, Jack and I settled in for the night.
We woke up on Sunday to watch 50 First Dates (really cute) and Chronicles of Riddick: Pitch Black (not bad for a Sci-fi flick with Vin Diesel in it). We ordered pizza for lunch.
Jack swung by the fire we put in the fireplace while Christine and I cleaned up the lakehouse, so we could go home.

Heidi comes to Visit – Heidi Bookheim worked with me at the Statesman, and dropped by for a visit last week. Jack is too cute smiling at people he’s never met before. Good social skills kid.
Daddy with a Beard – I grew my beard out for the first time ever… and Jack approved (for the most part). It’s gone now, but the pictures give you an idea of what it looked like. What do you think? Beard or not?
Today while I was working, Christine took Jack for a walk. He enjoyed walking around the block with her, and it was good for them to get out of the house for a few minutes. Hopefully all three of us can take a walk together more, or go to the park down the street. That’d be a lot of fun.
After work, I sat down with Jack to watch The Passion of the Christ DVD while Christine when to Gold’s Gym with Michelle. Jack and I made it through about 2/3 of the movie before Christine got home. Christine had a good time at the gym.
Watching The Passion was hard to do, but I’ll watch the rest of it again when I have some time to finish the movie… Christine’s not ready to watch it yet. I’m interested in the movie because I never really paid all that much attention in Sunday School. I don’t know that the movie is 100% accurate (or that it’s not for that matter) but it can’t be all that different than all of the other ‘made for TV’ versions I’ve seen over the years.
On Friday night, Christine and I dressed Jack up and went to dinner with some of our dearest friends in Austin. Joe Bunner, his wife Missy, and the girls Madison and Mackenzie took us to dinner at the Waterloo Ice House out on 360 and 2222. The photo gallery is here.
We had a blast eating there, and spending time with our friends. They’re actually selling their house too, by the way. It’s a 2600 square foot 3 bedroom 2 bath with a pool on a cul-de-sac in northwest Austin. If you’re interested, let me know and I’ll put you in touch with Joe.
Then on Saturday night, Kim, Brad, Michelle, Josh and Elise came over for “game night”. We never did get around to playing the games though.
Josh and I started drinking cooking around 5:30, but, I miscalculated and bought twice as many chicken wings as we really needed. While the prudent thing to do might have been to put half of the wings in the freezer, we decided to go ahead and just cook them all.
4 hours later we were done. Everyone was starving. So we ate, while the girls played on the computer, and the boys went outside to smoke a cigar. Good times. Some photos from the night are here.
I spent the evening putting together photo galleries and a couple of movies from photos we’ve taken since New Year’s Day, and a little video footage we had.

The Drummer – Josh was letting Jack play the airdrums that he has at his house.
Jack hit his 7 week old mark this week. And boy, is he really growing fast folks! We weighed him the other night, and we think he’s around 12 pounds now.
Let’s see… since the last time we posted an update, Jack has started learning lots of new things, and is impressing his parents all the time.
Christine took Jack to lunch last week with her old office-mates. They had a good time visiting with all of the folks from Freese & Nichols Austin office. Jack also got to meet his cousin Katherine last week. Jack really liked Katherine, and we’re hoping to talk her into helping us out a little with some baby sitting in the near future (Mom and Dad have to get out every once and a while, don’t they?)
We had dinner over at Josh and Elise’s house on Monday. Christine cooked a Lasagna (okay, Mrs. Stouffer’s coooked it, and we just warmed it up) to take over to their house, and we all chatted and played with Jack until 10:00, before Christine and I drove home.
Jack has definitely learned how to smile, and can do it on command now. He’s started cooing, and agooing, and mmmmming and making all sorts of other sounds. He’s also learning to push up with his feet when we hold him on our laps in a sitting position. And he’s just starting to play this his toys… fun times…
Jack just loves to “fly” over his Daddy’s head, and is too fun to play with when he’s in a good mood. When he’s in a fussy mood, he’s still cute, just in need of a little extra loving. And he’s not all that fussy all that often.
Jack is starting to take longer naps during the day. And those naps in his swingy swing are just too much fun… You should see Christine and I sneaking through the living room so as not to wake him. It’s too much fun.
Next week we go for his 2 month check up, and Jack gets his first shots.
In other news, I’ll be in Dallas on the 25th and 26th of January and then in New York the week of January 31st.
Christine and I drove up to Dallas for New Year’s Eve weekend, so we could have Christmas with the Kamp family. We left on Thursday around noon, and made good time getting there.
We really enjoyed spending time in Dallas with the family, and had a great time exchanging Christmas gifts.
Jack really enjoyed spending time with the family. He made smiles at Mary and Frank (that’s new) and made other noises and facial features for me (you know the type). He really liked Jennie and told Christine and I on the way home that she was free to visit Austin any-time she liked. Jack sat in Uncle Michael’s lap a few times, and enjoyed it very much, and enjoyed watching football with him. Uncle Steven and Jack were bragging to each other about who got better Christmas gifts… I think Jack won the argument.
A special gift that we received was comprised of two hand-made items from Frank: A little plant stand/table and a floor lamp. Both are made out of wood, and have a great finish and a neat design. Thanks Frank.
Mary relieved Christine at night, letting her sleep through the night for the most part, which was a very welcome gift indeed… (we may be going back up there every weekend, if we can talk Mary into staying up all night again … just kidding).
After spending 4 days in Dallas, we decided to head home — right as the weather was deciding to rain. We loaded the car down and got on the road around 4:45 or so.
We drove the first hour or so at about 20 miles an hour, through a torrential down pouring rain. The rain slackened up a bit around the Ellis County line, so we kicked it up to 45 or 50 there. After being on the road 2 hours, we were finally almost to Hillsboro and able to drive around 70 mph, until we hit the narrow lanes (due to the never ending construction on I-35).
One nice thing about the drive in the rain was that we discovered that the new Volvo we got has automatic windshield wipers. Who would have thought wipers could figure out for themselves how fast they need to wipe based on how hard it’s raining?
We made it as far as Salado, Texas before Jack started getting cranky. We’d been on the road 3 and a half hours.
So we stopped at the Salado Creek Grill and Truck Stop. I got gas while Christine got Jack out of the car. She took him into the bathroom to change him, and started feeding him in there, and then got stuck … she couldn’t carry everything back out.
So, after I moved the car, I went inside, and bought a bottle of water and a Mountain Dew, and some Halls lozenges. Then I ordered fried mushrooms and waited. And waited. I finally sent the waitress in to check on Christine, and she came back carrying the child seat for us to help Christine out of the bathroom.
We ordered a grill cheese and burger (greasiest food we’ve ever eaten by the way), ate dinner, got Jack fed and changed, and got back on the road.
We hit Austin around 9:30, and after almost 5 hours on the road, were home.
Ugh… I hate hard Texas rain sometimes (but then again, I’d rather drive in hard Texas rain than soft mushy wimpy Seattle rain any day).

This Christmas was Jack and Ella’s first Christmas.
What a special Christmas is was too. It snowed in Houston on Christmas Eve. Who’d have guessed Jack and Ella might get a white Christmas on their first Christmas … in Houston!?
We all met in Houston at Aunt Debbie’s for the annual Teaff family Christmas on Christmas Eve, along with about 40 other people (maybe more). Debbie and Raymond truly are fantastic hosts, and we’re thankful they continue to host Christmas for the whole family, year after year.
Jack and Ella were looking forward to seeing Santa. Jack was also anticipating meeting the rest of the Teaff side of the family, as this was his first outing to meet the family.
Ella is now 9 months old, and Jack is one month old.
All of the kids and adults had a wonderful time at Christmas… heck, even Wesley enjoyed himself, much to the dismay of one of Raymond and Debbie’s guest.
Presents were exchanged and Santa came and handed out gifts. He also asked everyone in attendance what they wanted for Christmas as they all sat on his lap. Poor ol’ Santa’s knees sure got a work-out (there were lots of families that Santa granted family pictures to, including ours).
I think everyone got what they wanted for Christmas, most of all, everyone seems to be in good health and great spirits, and looking forward to 2005.

We’ve been busy with Christmas for the past week or so, and that’s the primary reason you haven’t seen an update on this website lately, but…
I took some time this evening to edit and post a few more photo galleries:
Coming later this week (hopefully): Photos from the annual Teaff family Christmas gathering in Houston, some photos of Ella that Grandma had on CD last time she visited, and possibly even another movie or two from Christmas.
This week, Grandma came to visit Jack, Christine and I, because I was flying to Tulsa for work on Tuesday. (Sorry Tulsa family… I meant to call, I promise).
So, while I flew up to Oklahoma for work, Grandma Engler came to cover for me while I was out of town, and to help out during the day while I was at work. She stayed until today (Thursday).
While she was here, Grandma cooked some amazing meals, like homemade chicken soup (with some really good homemade noodles) and a fantastic potroast. Both meals are in the fridge, and will feed us for a few days still. She also brought up some Bellville Meat Market Sausage (always a crowd pleaser) and cooked steaks, asparagas for dinner one night when Brad and Kim came over.
Christine was able to get out of the house one night thanks to Grandma, and Christine had a good time with her friends at the Armadillo Christmas Bazaar.

This past weekend, Christine and I loaded up the car, and took Jack on his first outing. We drove to Fayettville to meet Evan, Shadel and Ella, and Reese, Karen and their 7 month old little girl Gabby.
We tried to take some family photos while we were there (the 6 of us) but I set the camera up wrong before I handed it to Reese, so we didn’t get photos, but we did get some video footage, and it turned out really cute, so…
