Yesterday was Cinco de Mayo, did anyone celebrate it?

Did you know why why you were celebrating?

If not, read here… I thought it was the celebration of Mexican Independance, but I was wrong… great article over at Kuro5hin, short and explanatory.

On Friday, Josh emailed me and said “hey dude, mind if we come up and visit this weekend?”. I’d been bugging him about coming up since they’re now living in Temple, which is much closer than Austin is. We really didn’t have anything planned, so I called Christine and she was okay with it, so they came up.

On Saturday, Christine and I were volunteering for the Monticello Mad Dash benefitting Kids Who Care, a local thespian training group for kids. Christine was on the planning committee for the race. We showed up at 5am, helped them with set up and the event… and then stuck around to tear it down. We were done by noon, and we really had a lot of fun.

After driving home, we both cleaned up and rested for a couple of hours. Josh and Elise arrived at about 1:45pm or so.

We hung out around the house, talking and what-not. I helped Josh with some php/MySQL and we played a little PS2. Then we all went down to the Fort Worth Stock Yards for the afternoon. We visited all of the little shops, Christine and Elise tasted Texas wines, and then we ate at Riscky’s Barbeque. Afterwards, we bought some beer, came home and played PS2 into the wee hours of the morning.

We woke up on Sunday, played a little more PS2 and then headed to the Mayfest being held at the Trinity River. We took Wesley with us, but they wouldn’t let him in, so we decided to head back home… Josh and Elise needed to get back to Temple anyways. We stopped at a garage sale on the way home, but no one bought anything. The poor old ladies selling their stuff really didn’t have much and wanted way too much for it.

Josh and Elise left for Temple at 3, and Christine and I are watching Moulin Rouge this afternoon. We might even watch Bridget Jones’s Diary tonight if we’re up to it.

Today was a fairly uneventful day. I’m running into all sorts of questions/problems with our new ad sales software, probably because I did something wrong and don’t know that I did something wrong… We’re getting it fixed though, so it’s not that bad… just frustrating to look at reports and know that they’re wrong, but you’re doing everything you can to make them right.

I left work at 5 today… been there too much lately…

The weekend was pretty uneventful, but Christine and I did finally go see the Rookie. Great movie, highly recommended. We went to a matinee to save some cash, it was definitely worth it.

After the movie we stopped by a local little resteraunt call the Wing Stop. Good place for Hot Wings. We brought them home and enjoyed them… in fact, our neighbors had to go pick some up because we were telling them how good they were. After dinner I mowed the lawn, borowed the neighbors edger, and got everything cleanly dressed, and helped him move around some sand and other stuff for his flower beds. They were putting in Azalieas (sp?)

On Sunday we got up and went to church at 9:30. Our new Sunday School class wasn’t meeting at their regular time or place, but rather we were attending a musical service in the Leonard Memorial chapel (a very good acustical setting). The service was focused around the theme of “light” which is sort of a central theme to a lot of passages in the Bible and in the hymns that were sung. The choir was awesome. After that service we attended communion for the first time in a while.

After church, we stopped at a local Americana type resteraunt called Lucile’s Bistro. Christine had the biggest Chicken Salad sandwich I’ve seen in a while, while I ate a great Reuben sandwich. The chips are home-made, the pickles are fresh and crispy, and the Bingnets are wonderful. Go visit them sometime.

After lunch, Christine went to the gym, I played Final Fantasy X some more. Then I worked on kylehuntmusic.com (almost done) and Christine worked on some stuff for Freese & Nichols.

Josh and I chatted on Sunday a little about life, and he uploaded a copy of his video from his website. I’m working on getting it smaller than 10MB with Quicktime and if i can I’ll post a copy of it for you all to download here as well.

Altogether a pleasant weekend, though it was too short.

Last weekend, Christine and I made the trip up to Oklahoma City on Friday. We left Fort Worth at about 5:00 (maybe a little later) and braved the terrible weather coming down from the north. We drove, fairly uninterupted (a first for the Engler Family) to OKC, and arrived somewhere between 9:30 and 10:30. We drove around the city a little bit (because the navigator “knew where we were going”) and pulled into the Waterford Marriot (the only 4 star hotel in OKC).

We parked the car under the carport, and walked inside. After a few minutes of figuring out what room we were in (we were sharing a suite with Michael, Christine’s brother, which wasn’t clear to the desk staff), we took the elevator up to the room and sat down for a few minutes. Michael offered us a beer or two and some cold pizza. We talked for a bit, and an hour later, I was outside again, getting our bags… It must have been 20 degrees outside by this point. When we originally parked the car, it had a little water on it from the drive, but when I got back outside, it was covered in ice.

Michael helped Christine and I get everything upstairs, and I parked the car. The trip to OKC was over and we were safe. (An hour or so later, Steven, Christine’s younger brother, called to say that he and Jenny had pulled off the road somewhere and were spending the night… the weather was just too bad).

On Saturday morning, we all woke up to a true winter morning. Mary called us at about 7:30 (too early for a relaxing weekend 😉 ) and told us that Grandmother’s party was cancelled due to the bad weather. We were sad, but tired, so we went back to sleep after a cup of coffee.

Somewhere between noon and 2:00, we went to Bellini’s Restaurant across the street for lunch. We had pasta, fish, and a sandwich. It was very good, and I’d recommend it to anyone looking for a fun place to eat lunch when the roads are iced over.

The entire Daron (Grandmother’s surname) family arrived at the hotel somewhere between 2 and 3 and we split the better part of the afternoon between a couple of suites on the 5th floor enjoying each other’s company. We met a lot of people we didn’t know and caught up with a lot that we did know. Grandmother sure does have a lot of classy friends and family members… I won’t go through them all in this story, but they are of all sorts, from New York to California, Texas to Oregon, and all parts in between. Each person is unique and none of them are boring. We hope to visit with a lot more of our family in the future.

Christine gave Grandmother a “memory book” that has been constructed in our home from all of Grandmother’s friends and family sending in their “memorys” of Grandmother or Granddaddy. It was a lot of work for Christine and Mary, but the book turned out wonderful and Grandmother will have something to read whenever she feels lonely (which is probably going to never happen, but nonetheless the book is beautiful). It’s a handbound book with inserts that Grandmother can add to whenever she likes.

Michael and I split the family party and headed down to the bar with Tom, Christine’s cousin from California, to play pool. Tom treated us all to drinks for a good 4-5 hours, so we really got great a pool, and only spilt a few beers on the floor.

Around 8 or 9 the rest of the clan joined us for dinner at Murphy’s Chop House, which was over-priced, but worth it for the conversation. All of Christine’s family members have some form of higher education and thus really enjoy discussing topics that most of us don’t really get into… The discussion centered around abortion, the death penalty, the economy and a few other topics at my end of the table… and after two or three bottles of wine… it was quite lively. No one was injured, and I think that everyone went home without an insult being delivered. It was a great dinner.

We stayed up until about 2am that night, sitting in the bar talking to more family. Grandmother’s 84 year old sister, Maxine, stayed downstairs with us, just as lively as the rest of us, and her two daughters from the New York area were a lot of fun.

On Sunday morning we attended a service at the First Baptist Church of Oklahoma City, a beautiful church in Downtown, and the same church that Grandmother has attended for 50 some odd years I think. The windows on one side of the church were blow out during the Oklahoma City bombing, but they replaced them right away with almost exact replicas from Italy. The highlight of the service was a bell-choir piece that was composed for Grandmother. It was a medley of her favorite songs. It was lovely.

After church, we traveled over to the National Cowboy museum for a buffet lunch with the family, prior to our drive home. Lunch was fantastic, if the conversation was slightly toned down from the night before…

We had an uneventful drive home, but a great weekend. Grandmother’s 90th birthday party was a success.

So, it’s Thursday, March 7th, and I’ve taken the day off…

Why? You might ask…

The honest answer is “because I was sort of forced to.” You see… the company that I work at has this vacation policy that says I can’t hold over vacation from year to year. I asked about it for two months before I was given a good answer. That answer was “John, you can’t hold over your vacation to next year, but because of your National Guard commitment, [and the fact that we’re going to make you take unpaid leave for those two weeks] we’ll try to work it out so that you can hold some of it over…”

I didn’t get anything in writing though, which is what I asked for, and I still don’t know what day the company’s “floating holiday” is this year, even though the President/CEO was supposed to announce it before the beginning of the year…. whatever…

But the bottom line is that we’re really busy at work, and I should probably be there. They’re hurting me by making me take the vacation right now, as well as hurting themselves…

Moral of the story: It’s 2:30 in the afternoon and I’ve had three beers – wish it wasn’t so cold outside… I’d have gone fishing…

I recommend anyone that knows me needs to read up on what my buddy Josh has been up to in the last week… Seems like I’m just as excited that he’s moving to Temple as he is…

I just hope Elise finds a job in Temple soon, and she can just move up there with him, while the lease runs on empty in Austin…

Christine and I had our apartment lease open for a full month after we moved into our house… sure we wasted a month’s worth of rent, but it was worth it to be together (I was planning on working out of the apartment for a few weeks, but we figured “screw that” pretty quickly).

Jump on over to Janicek.com to see what Josh’s bladder has been up to.

Woohoo!!!! I just have to tell everyone how excited that I am that Josh, my best friend since highschool, is going to soon join the world of the employed. For those of you that don’t know, Josh has shown amazing loyalty, sticking it out with a company that he knew was going down last year (Vidbook) and was eventually fired, when the owner decided to close the doors.

He’s been leaching off the government on unemployment, while looking for something new since then, and thankfully this week, he received a formal job offer from a company in Temple, TX, for a job as a Webmaster/Developer (or something close). I’m so excited that he has a job, cause now I know that I won’t have to listen to him when he’s depressed, and he can pick me up when I am… (Josh, I’m just kidding about the leaching and the ‘i won’t have to listen to you bit’).

Monday, February 18th, is Mary’s Birthday, so we invited the entire Kamp family over to our house in Forth Worth to visit for the day, and to celebrate Mary’s Birthday. They all arrived around 3:00, and dinner was to be had at 4:00. Christine got up this morning at 6:00 am to cook a large pot roast with apples and apple gravy, and the house was cleaned up by the time they arrived… and dinner was almost ready.

After a couple of bottles of wine, a wonderful dinner, and a lot of catching up (we haven’t seen Steven or Jenny, and Michael in a while) we all decided it was time to sing the birthday girl a song, so we gathered around Mary to sing her “Happy Birthday”. Christine made Mary a double decker Red Velvet cake with Cream-cheese icing. She decorated the top of the cake with a red rose and cake crumbs. It was delicious, and the Birthday girl “got over” on the number of candles I think…

After cake, our wonderful neighbors, the Bullocks, came over so that we could also celebrate Tommy’s 1st birthday, which was last week. While they were here, we asked them to take a family picture of us, so that we could preserve the moment. We all gathered on the stairs, even Wesley and Patton, and Karen snapped this photo of us. You can see where the Kamp’s get their wonderful looks. Aren’t we marvelous?

Friends and family on a Sunday afternoon… who could ask for more?

Thanks to my buddy Josh, I’m now a qualified hand model. Josh’s wedding photographers, Bill Kennedy and Jennie Lindberg, have decided to use a picture of my hands, holding Josh and Elise’s rings on their website. That’s pretty cool, IMO. (click into their flash enabled site, and you’ll see my hands at the bottom of their navigation bar)

So, I’ll add that to my resume here shortly, and I’ll see if I can turn up any new work for my hands…

Those crazy Aggies are up to it again. It looks like the A&M has cloned a domestic house cat. To which I say “why would anyone want two cats that are exactly the same?” I mean… Patton is a great kitty, but really? two of them? why?

I’m sure Christine wouldn’t mind, but that would mean twice the litter box work, for the same amount of enjoyment…

though it might be funny to watch them play 😉

I came across this quote today, and it seems so cliche, yet so pertinent to so many of the things I come across daily. I thought I’d share it with you:

“By failing to plan, you’re planning to fail.”
— unknown

just plan a little and your life will be more enjoyable… and this can be very pervasive… when you see some success in one area, you can apply those lessons to other areas… i wish more people that I interacted with planned a little more…

just a quick note to let everyone know that I really enjoyed my weekend with the National Guard. It’s great to be in “the army” again… even if it’s just one weekend a month. I forgot how much I missed the comraderie and Espirit d’corps that should be a large part of the Army experience. It just wasn’t there when I was on active duty at Fort Lewis, and I think perhaps, that’s why I hated it. There’s nothing like being around solders who enjoy learning and working hard…

I’ll leave you with a quote on this note:
